Auckland District Health Board Maori Mental Health Services provides services for adults aged 17-65 years  via two specific teams - Kapua Awatea and Maioha Tupuranga. Both teams are community based and provide services for Tangata Whaiora Maori who are living in the community of Tamaki Makaurau. The teams are comprised predominantly of Maori staff who come from a variety of iwi (tribal affiliations). Staff carry expertise knowledge of tikanga Maori, have life experience, clinical expertise with mental health issues and most importantly a passion about supporting Maori on their recovery pathway.

Kapua Awatea is a team comprised of Team Leader, Maori community support workers, clinical psychologist, social worker and nurses.

The type of services this team provides can include:

  • Specialist needs assessment for Maori
  • Kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face) referrals to specialist Maori Service providers when appropriate
  • Maori cultural support and advice for ADHB Staff
  • Cultural interventions and therapy
  • Community Support

Maioha Tupuranga is a new team that provides intensive rehabilitation and clinical support for tangata whaiora with complex and long-term support needs. This team develops wrap around packages of individualised care for tangata whaiora. These packages will be delivered in partnership with a Maori community service provider. Packages of care are individually determined with tangata whaiora following an assertive outreach model within our Kaupapa Maori context to support their recovery pathway to independent living within the community of their choice.
